Animal work indicating flavor aversion produced by chemical aversion therapy (CAT) with Li was investigated for the treatment of alcoholism. The abstinence rate of 25 patients 6 mo. later was significantly better than the rate for an equivalent group of patients, treated with a disulfuram-like drinking deterrent, calcium carbimide. The rate for the CAT group improved if 8 patients were excluded who did not develop sickness reactions to Li. CAT with Li appears safe given proper medical precautions.
