A syntactic model for the computer generation of textures is proposed. A texture pattern is composed of fixed-sized windows as subpatterns. Each window is represented by a tree of which each node corresponds to a pixel in the window. A pattern primitive is the label representing the gray level of each pixel. A tree grammar is then used to characterize the windowed texture pattern. Distortion or noise in the texture pattern can be considered by using stochastic tree grammars. A procedure for the inference of tree grammars from texture patterns is proposed. Illustrative examples for the generation of textures from tree grammars are presented.
