We developed two types of radiation-resistant magnets for a new external proton beam line of the KEK 12 GeV Proton Synchrotron (KEK-PS). One was designed with the polyimide resin pre-impregnated (PRP) glass cloth to insulate the magnet coil. Most of the magnets for the new external proton beam line were manufactured using the PRP and no other organic material. The radiation life of the insulator was tested at the existing proton beam of the KEK-PS and no serious damage was observed up to 4 × 108Gy. The other type was designed for a higher radiation dose of 1011Gy which often occurs at just downstream of production targets. The magnet coil was insulated with inorganic materials only, such as high-alumina cement and asbestos tape.
