The authors have been able to show, in two previous papers (Jones, 1973; Jones and Hall, 1973) that a larval model, based on the idea that food density is critical for survival during the larval stage, can explain much of the early life history of species such as haddock and cod.In this paper the previous results are summarized. We then used the model to consider theoretically how larval survival might be influenced by the size range of food organisms consumed. This has provided insight into how natural selection, by operating on this variable, might have determined egg size, and hence fecundity, in these species.
