Numerous findings ofCythere pumilaBrady1866 along the southern Australian and northern Tasmanian shores enabled us to study not only the shell morphology but also the soft parts of the animal. Due to differences in the male copulatory organ it was possible to distinguish two species that in the past were reported as ‘variation’. Further investigations yielded new information aspects on the development of the third frontal muscle scar in hemicytherids. As a result of our investigations the genusAmbolusn. gen. is introduced. The type species of the genus isAmbolus pumilus(Brady1866) andAmbolus coniunctusn. sp. is described as a new species.
