To HAVE BEEN ASKED tO deliver this 20th Joseph McDowell Mathews Oration this year is an honor for which I am deeply appreciative to Dr. Quan and the Council. Initially, in view of my long association with Dr. Quan, I sensed a hint of nepotism. This feeling was reinforced after I had reviewed the list of those who have preceded me in this role. They are a gallery of physicians distinguished not only by their professional contributions to this Society and the specialty it represents, but also in their varied personal qualities. Reading their presentations raised a disquieting concern as how to measure up to the standards they set. The Mathews Orations have had a broad spectrum of topics. I commend their collective review to anyone interested in an overall view of this specialty. The intent of all of them has been to provide a memorial to Dr. Mathews, the moving force in the establishment of this specialty and in the genesis of this Society. I believe that in a broader sense these lectures should be taken as recognition of a great many of our professional forebears and of what they have done to bring us where we are. In honoring Mathews we also wish to honor them.
