Adolescence is a dynamic time of life, defined by physical, emotional, cognitive, and social transitions. Many of these transitions increase adolescent vulnerability to HIV infection while necessitating unique approaches to treatment. This article reviews the epidemiology of HIV and AIDS in adolescents; guidelines for clinical practice with HIV-infected adolescents, including medical and psychosocial care; and recommendations for adolescent outreach, counseling, testing, and prevention.
