With the impressive series of illustrative examples¿ including viruses of all sorts of organisms from humans to bacteria¿ given by Van Regenmortel [12], there seem to be no further obstructions towards the implication of¿ a single universal system applicable to all viruses¿(Art. 3.1 of the Code). ICTV seems to continue disregarding the objections against overall italicization. What is finally needed is consensus. With respect to the use of binomials this particularly holds for approval from the side of virologists dealing with organisms other than plants. I therefore applaud the expression of hope by the President of ICTV that his note in the Archives of Virology [12], now also published on the ICTV Internet Public Message Board (www. danforthcenter. org/ILTAB/ICTVnet/),¿ will elicit many responses from individual virologists¿. The subject merits wide attention. In science we must strive for precision and must keep communication unambiguous.
