Astudent in a tennis class commented recently," I'll play, but don't make me• think; it gives me a headache." Not surprisingly, students do not usually associate thinking with physical education. Yet most physical education teachers recognize the benefits of actively involving students in the critical thinking process, which is defined by Ennis as" reasonable and reflective thinking that is focused on deciding what to believe or do"(1987, p. 10). Teachers want to provide students with the information and skills necessary to think critically and make informed decisions both in and out of physical education class.Middle school students are at a unique point in the maturation process; they are rapidly changing and are seeking risk-taking and confidencebuilding activities. The physical education environment, with its inherent psychomotor, social, and cognitive challenges, is rich with opportunities for these learners to increase their critical thinking abilities. As students' cognitive involvement increases, learning becomes more
