METHODSTrachealis muscle was obtained from the cervical tracheas of mongrel dogs anesthetized with 30 mg/kg pentobarbital. Muscle strips were dissected and equilibrated in a Krebs-Ringer solution as described previously(33). The solution was equilibrated with an 02-CO2 gas mixture so as to achieve a measured bath Paz of 600 mm Hg, Pcoz of 45 mm Hg, and pH of 7.40 at a temperature of 37 & 1 C. A N2-CO2 mixture was also prepared so that the bath Paz could be rapidly decreased to< 10 mm Hg while maintaining pH and PCOZ constant.
