It would be possible, clearly, to produce a far longer list of major writers who did not drink heavily. Nevertheless, whatever criteria are used to define what it is about a particular author's works that permits the epithet'major', the list given above is extensive enough to suggest that there is a higher proportion of heavy drinkers amongst creative writers than would be expected in a general propulation sample of similar size. It would seem, therefore, if only in terms of counting heads, that there is some relationship between heavy drinking and literary creativity, or, possibly, between heavy drinking and literary success.
