Slow addition of powdered (NH4) 2 [OsCl6] to 2 2· 20, followed by refluxing for 10 h, results in a mixture of [Os (N-H3) 5 (N2)] C12 and cis-[0s (NH3) 4 (N2) 2] Cl2. Further reaction of the mixturewith 2 2· 20 results in~ 90% yield of [Os (NH3) 5 (N2)] Cl2. When the reverse addition is performed (ie 2 2· 20 is addedto (NH4) 2 [OsC16]), the very exothermic reaction that follows produces the previously unknown nitrido-bridged complex [(NH3) 5OsNOs (NH3) 5] Cl5'H20 in~ 90% yield. This compound is a convenient starting material for the preparation of a variety of íraŦí, traní-[X (NH3) 4OsNOs (NH3) 4X]"+ complexes in high yields. The electronic absorption spectrum of [(NH3) 5GsN0s (NH3) 5] Cl5'H20 has been assigned with the aid of a MO diagram and a comparison of its spectrumwith those of other ĩ-3-complexes of Ru and Os.
