4 strains of an acid-stable picornavirus were isolated in rhesus kidney tissue cultures from pharyngeal swabs of children with evidence of pneumonia and bronchiolitis. A representative strain (Fermon) was distinct from other human enteroviruses in a number of serological tests, except for a low 1-way cross with Coxsackie A3 virus. Only 1 of the 4 isolates was pathogenic for suckling mice, lesions being similar to those produced by Coxsackie A viruses.C. H. Andrewes.
