Polymer nanoparticles are used in a variety of fields and their demand is increasing. However, the emulsion polymerization method for synthesis of these materials commonly uses a large amount of surfactant, which has become an environmental burden problem. On the other hand, the surfactant was not needed in the soap-free emulsion polymerization method, but the polymer nuclei grow by repeated agglomeration to form particle, so it is hard to obtain nanoparticles. In this study, we succeeded in synthesis of polystyrene nanoparticles by using a melamine foam with a 3D network structure as a reactor to prevent the particle aggregation from growing. Furthermore, the particle size can be controlled by the mesh size in melamine foam.
