From day 5 to day 10 of pregnancy, C57BL/6J mice were given a liquid diet with 25% of total daily energy supplied by ethanol; controls had sucrose to replace ethanol or a stock diet. At other times all mice had a stock diet. The mice were killed on day 19 of pregnancy. Twice as many foetuses were resorbed by mice given ethanol as by control groups. Of the 16 mice given ethanol, 15 had at least 1 malformed foetus with 31 malformed foetuses altogether; 5 only of the 29 controls had malformed foetuses. Of the remaining 98 foetuses in the group given ethanol, 31 had an external or internal anomaly. In the control groups, 3 foetuses in each had anomalies.
