Today, peritoneal dialysis (PD) is considered synonymous with renal replacement therapy used for the management of patients with end-stage renal disease. However, over the 83 years since Ganter first used PD in humans, it has been used for the management of diverse clinical conditions like congestive heart failure (CHF), pancreatitis, psoriasis, and hypothermia as well as to deliver intraperitoneal chemotherapy, in the absence of end-stage renal disease. 1 Of all these other conditions, CHF and intraperitoneal chemotherapy probably remain potentially important therapeutic uses of PD. 1, 2 In this paper, we review the rationale, reported clinical experience, and challenges in the utilization of PD for the management of treatment-resistant CHF.
