Wilson Hall is the central building at Fermilab, the particle physics laboratory near Chicago, the city where Enrico Fermi worked and taught from 1946 until 1954. This structure, more elegant than any of the CERN buildings, was desired by the founder and first director of the laboratory Robert Wilson, known by all – in the small world of particle physics – as ‘Bob’. A visionary man, Bob Wilson was a sculptor, architect, physicist and accelerator expert, having studied at Berkeley as a doctoral student under Ernest Lawrence.
