Isoprenaline stimulates secretion of sialic acid from rat submaxillary and sublingual glands, while having no effect on arginase or acid phosphatase. kinetics of secretion and resynthesis of sialic acid have been studied and compared with isoprenaline-induced secretion and synthesis of amylase in rat parotid gland. The time courses of secretion and resynthesis in submaxillary and parotid glands are very similar, although the degrees of secretion and rate of synthesis are quite different. The difference between these glands and the sublingual gland is discussed in relation to the effect of chronic isoprenaline treatment in stimulating enlargement of the submaxillary and parotid glands, but not the sublingual gland. Submaxillary glands enlarged by isoprenaline retain their sensitivity to the drug as a stimulant of secretion. The effect of actinomycin D which has no effect on the resynthesis of sialic acid in the submaxillary gland is discussed in relation to messenger RNA.
