Studied the effects of fenfluramine (15–60 mg/day) on 10 autistic inpatients (aged 3–5.75 yrs). Side effects included drowsiness or lethargy, weight loss, and irritability. Positive therapeutic effects included increased relatedness and animated facial expression; decreases in temper tantrums, aggressiveness, self-mutilation, and hyperactivity; and improved sleep pattern. Four Ss were rated as markedly improved and 2 as moderately improved by fenfluramine.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
