Oral microorganisms were tested for their susceptibility to various fluoride salts. SnF2 and CuF2 had a better antimicrobial effect than did NaF and NH4F. Low pH enhanced the bactericidal effect of the fluoride salts. The cariostatic effect of fluoride is not due to a selective bactericidal effect on cariogenic bacteria.
