In a seroepidemiological survey of influenza C virus infection in Japan sera were collected from 186 healthy subjects aged 0-80 years in 1976, and a further sample of 434 sera was collected in 1979. These were tested for haemagglutination-inhibiting antibodies to influenza C/Aomori/74 virus. Low titres of antibody were present in all infants aged less than 2 months, but the incidence of this, presumably maternal, antibody fell to zero in infants aged 6 months. The proportion of antibody-positive sera increased rapidly in children aged over 3 years to reach 80-90% of sera from those aged 7-10 years. In older people there was a slower increase in the proportion of positive sera to almost 100%: only 5 of 254 sera from subjects aged over 30 years were seronegative. These high levels of both incidence and titres of antibody were maintained beyond the age of 70 years. No significant differences in the age-distribution of antibodies were found between sera collected in 1976 and those collected in 1979. These results are similar to those reported from England, the USA and other countries.E.A. Boulter
