An analytical model to estimate the AC losses and the inter-layer current distribution in co-axial multi-layer cable conductors with superconducting magnetic shields was developed. In our model, the effect of magnetic field induced by the shielding current flowing in the magnetic shield conductors was taken into consideration. The inter-layer current distribution and the AC losses were numerically calculated and their dependence on the twist pitches and directions of the cables was evaluated. The analytical results showed the strong dependence of the losses and the current distribution on the twist pitches and directions of the cables. It was also found that the magnetic field produced by the shielding currents strongly affected the current distribution and the AC losses in the conductor part of the cable. The current distribution and the AC losses dissipated in the magnetic shield conductors could be larger than those of the transport current conductors. Examples of optimized cable structure are also shown.
