In this 2-volume handbook edited by E. Negishi and A. de Meijere almost every aspect of palladium chemistry is covered in full detail. The book set is organized into 10 parts basically following reaction types which are subsequently divided in smaller chapters. Each part has a brief introduction by the editors providing guidance in the particular field. Every chapter comes with its own references which makes it easy to track down the original articles. The literature is covered in general until the year 1999, a few references cited are from 2000. At the end of volume 2 a separate reference index (35 pages) with a special sub-index leading to monographs and reviews is included. The subject index with over 100 pages is well organized and comprehensive. As stated in the preface, the editors are planning a periodical update either in electronic and/or paper form±in my opinion a very promising way of enhancing the value of the book and keeping it updated. Volume 1 starts out with some historical aspects on palladium chemistry followed by a general discussion on properties and fundamental reaction types. Part II covers palladium compounds without Pd¿ C bonds, their preparation and physical and chemical properties. Part III is one of the major parts (750 pages) dealing with reactions involving reductive eliminations. In this chapter Negishi, Suzuki, Stille, Sonogashira and other cross-coupling reactions are presented including asymmetric variants, applications in natural product synthesis and C¿ N and C¿ O bond formation, among others. Part IV discusses carbopalladations, most prominently the Heck reaction in all aspects±intramolecular, asymmetric, cascade type reactions. Also included are examples of industrial use. Volume 2 continues with Part V on Pdcatalyzed nucleophilic substitutions like the Tsuji±Trost reaction and related topics. Wacker oxidations, aminopalladations, rearrangements and applications in the synthesis of biologically active compounds are also covered. Part VI is devoted to carbonylations and related reactions involving migratory insertions. Hydrogenations and hydropalladations are discussed in Part VII. The Parts VIII and IX are on miscellaneous reactions involving palladium, such as dimerizations, oxidations and skeletal rearrangements. The last part deals with technological developments including catalysis in aqueous media, polymer-supported catalysts and use of Pd catalysts in combinatorial chemistry. In summary, this 2-volume book set provides an excellent and truly comprehensive overview of palladium in organic synthesis. The editors and authors (2 main editors±Negishi, de Meijere, 8 on the editorial board±B‰ ckvall, Cacchi, Hayashi, Ito, Kosugi, Murahashi, Oshima and Yamamoto and over 130 contributors from all over the world) have done an excellent job!
