Mitochondria were observed to consist of (1) a limiting, double membrane, (2) an internal, structureless matrix, and (3) a system of internal ridges (cristae mitochondriales) that protruded into the interior of the organelle and appeared to be folds of the internal mitochondrial membrane. These structural features are well illustrated in electron micrographs of animal and plant tissues. Variations in the plane of section account for the different appearances and are consistent with the three dimensional model proposed and illustrated by the author. The structure of the mitochrondrion is correlated with the biochemical data from studies on mitochondrial fractions.
