Sensors, installed at a Dense Oceanfloor Network System for Earthquakes and Tsunamis (DONET) station using a remotely operated vehicle, buried in the seafloor. The cylindrical vessel is pressure resistant and houses seismometers. Credit: JAMSTECFor the past thousand years, devastating megathrust earthquakes, sometimes accompanied by huge tsunamis, have occurred repeatedly along the Nankai trough off southwestern Japan [eg, Ando, 1975]. To help us prepare for such earthquakes in the future, we have developed oceanic observation networks to monitor seismotectonic activities in this region.
