The assimilation process of Russian immigrants and preservation of the Russian language and culture in Australia

According to the 2006 Census of Population and Housing, the Russian population of Australia was 82,409 people: 15,354 among them were born in Russia and 67,055 are descendants of Russian immigrants. The history of Russians in Australia has been meticulously described by many authors, for example, Frolova (1996), Govor (1997), Kanevskaja (2007) and McNair and Poole (1992), who trace it back to the beginning of the nineteenth century. The main waves influencing the current situation are those of Harbin Russians (Ryan, 2005) and of the late Soviet and post-Soviet times (cf. Kalyuga, 1999).The purpose of this paper is to present, on the basis of interviews conducted, some preliminary conclusions on the mechanisms of the assimilation process of Russian immigrants and their descendants with English-speaking Australians and to discuss the factors that help them to preserve
