In the last half century, the Japanese population made great strides in achieving higher levels of life expectancy w1, 2x. Japanese females achieved a life expectancy at birth of approximately 85 years of age in 2000 w3x, which represented a 24-year increase from the 1950 level of 61 years of age. In other words, there was a 40% increase in life expectancy. The improvement that is attributable to the decrease in years of potential life lost (YPLL) from uterine cancer is 0.9%. In comparison, Irish females also increased their life span, but by a relatively lower level, adding 12 more years from a level of 67 years of age in 1950 to 79 years of age in 2000. The improvement that is attributable to the decrease in YPLL from uterine cancer is 0.1%.
