The various mechanisms postulated for the occurrence of A- and V-segregation in cast steel produced via both the ingot and continous- casting routes are reviewed. A brief general description is given of macrosegregation, followed by a detailed account of the theories of A- and V-formation with particular emphasis on the importance and interaction of fluid flow, thermal conditions, and composition. Mathematical models that have recently been proposed are discussed and, finally, methods to minimize A- and V-segregation in cast steel are suggested.
