This chapter explores the use of large-scale video surveys for the study and improvement of classroom instruction. I begin by discussing the current lack of information about classroom instruction, and argue that both understanding and improvement of classroom learning will require the collection of classroom process data. I next discuss video as data, pointing out its potentials and pitfalls.
