In some cities, per capita energy consumption has grown at approximately the same rate as their spatial growth (Baynes and Bai, 2009). From an urban metabolic viewpoint, energy is one of the most critical resource flows in urban environments. It is a primary driver of both the physical and economic systems; in the form of fossil fuels it is also a primary source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and a driver of human-induced climate change.
