Many children with ASD exhibit hyperactivity, distractibility, and impulsiveness (Gadow et al. 2006; Lecavalier et al. 2019; Simonoff et al. 2008). Furthermore, many who show this symptom picture also meet criteria for ADHD. In contrast to DSM-IV-TR, DSM-5 endorses the diagnosis of ADHD in children with ASD (American Psychiatric Association 2000, 2013). Given that ASD is a lifelong condition with onset early in childhood, treatment of co-occurring ADHD may improve the quality of life for affected children and their families. These nosological debates aside, the co-occurrence of ASD and ADHD symptoms is common. In a population-based sample of 946 twins with ADHD, 32% of males and 75% of females exceeded the threshold for autistic traits as measured by the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS)(Reiersen et al. 2007). Lecavalier et al.(2019) combined data from six federally funded randomized trials focused on disruptive behavior. In this sample of 658 youth with ASD (ages 3–17 years), 80% were classified as probable or definite cases of ADHD. The confluence of developmental disabilities and ADHD symptoms is also reflected in the European concept of deficits in attention, motor control, and perception (Gillberg 2003).
