Following the lead of such scholars as Mier Sternberg and Robert Alter, Herbert Brichto here adopts a literary-critical aproach to the interpretation of the Bible. Arguing that principles of literary criticism developed in connection with other literature can enhance our appreciation of scripture, he offers his own grammar of the poetics of biblical narrative and shows how it can be used to illuminate a variety of specific texts, including the book of Jonah, the story of the Golden Calf and a variety of episodes involving the prophets Elijah and Elisha.
