This paper is concerned with cultural influences on drinking behaviour. Using a socio-cultural perspective the results of a recent cross cultural study of Irish, Anglo-Irish and English drinking patterns showed how two different societies, Irish and English, had different patterns of drinking. Evidence was presented of the customs, social meaning and function of alcohol, the extent and prevalence of drinking as well as the cultural norms for the use of alcohol among young people, and their parents, in the three groups. It has been shown from the Anglo-Irish results how a change or shift in a culturally established behaviour pattern can occur as a group becomes acculturated over time to an alternative cultural pattern, in this case an English pattern of drinking.
