1. We consider two-terminal circuits with an exponential conductivity law. The concept of resistance is introduced and its interpretation given in terms of transport problems for various values of the exponent. Conditions are given that ensure that the resistances satisfy the metric and ultrametric inequalities. Thus the resistance may be regarded as the distance between the terminals of the circuit. The general problem of computing circuits and its connection with optimization of flows [ 1 ] is considered in [2] and [3]. In this note we use the concepts and notations introduced in [3].
