Absorption of cholesterol from the intestinal tract of the roach, E. floridana, has been shown to occur predominantly in the crop but probably also in the gastric caeca. The amount absorbed is approximately proportional to the amount of cholesterol ingested over the range 0.05-500 [mu]g. The role of ester if ication in the intestinal absorption of cholesterol has been studied, but remains incompletely defined. However, several lines of evidence suggest that esterification is not an obligatory event, though it may facilitate absorption at low dietary concentrations. Evidence is presented for the absorption of intact aliphatic cholesteryl esters from the gut. Cholestanol, cholesteryl methyl ether and cholesteryl chloride are absorbed about as efficiently as cholesterol. [DELTA]7-Cholestenol is absorbed more efficiently, but [beta]-sitosterol,[DELTA]4_cholestenol and epicholestanol are absorbed less efficiently than cholesterol. These findings are compared with those from similar studies in vertebrates.
