A new blood-group antibody named anti-Sda reacts with most adult Caucasian blood samples giving a characteristic appearance of well-defined agglutinates among a large number of free cells. The strength of the reaction varies widely between individual red-cell samples the best agglutination being obtained if a 1-stage EDTA. technique is used with an antiglobulin reagent that contains a potent anti-gammaM antibody, or if enzyme-treated cells are used in a 2-stage complement binding antiglobuin technique. Most of the red cells of Sd(a+) persons may carry the Sda antigen, and the antigen strength may not be related to the age of individual red cells. All cord blood red-cell samples examined gave negative reactions. The antibody appears to be a complement fixing gammaM globulin and the antigen to be serologically independent of the other main blood group systems.
