A comprehensive analysis of polarity sensitivity should take into consideration two different factors:(i) elements that license Negative Polarity Items (NPIs), and (ii) locality conditions which hold between the licenser and the NPI. 1 I argue in this paper that polarity sensitivity can be accounted for by adopting an interactive model combining a modified version of Ladusaw's (1980) downward entailment (DE) theory (for licensing conditions) and the binding approach advocated in Progovac (1988, 1991)(for locality conditions). This new approach, call it EN-BI (ENtailment+ Binding), is designed to solve the problems raised by either a purely semantic or a purely syntactic approach, while combining the virtues of both.
