This study is the first to examine the relationship between the therapeutic alliance and interpersonal complementarity during the early stage of psychotherapy. After the third therapy session, 36 pairs of patients and therapists from a variety of outpatient settings recorded their perceptions of their therapeutic alliance using the Working Alliance Inventory and rated each other’s therapy behaviors on the Check List of Interpersonal Transactions. Results revealed positive associations between patient-therapist interpersonal complementarity and both patients’ and therapists’ perception of the alliance. Correlations also revealed that the more extreme or abnormal the patient’s interpersonal behavior (as rated by his or her therapist), the more both the patient and the therapist perceived a less positive working alliance in their relationship.
