Part of Palgrave Macmillan’s Great Thinkers in Economics series and interspersed with personal recollections of Sraffa, this book is a labour of love. Roncaglia begins by stating that Sraffa was one of the two greatest economists of the 20th century (the other being Keynes). To support this claim, Roncaglia traces the evolution of Sraffa’s ideas from his published works, discusses Sraffa’s impact on Gramsci, Wittgenstein and Keynes, and assesses the development of Sraffa’s ideas by his most important followers. Roncaglia states that Sraffa wanted his contribution to be evaluated mainly on the basis of his published work; hence the information available in the Sraffa Papers at Trinity College, Cambridge, is sparingly used.
