For example, aspects that suggest learned behavior (eg, voluntary, operant, emotional) are expected to involve cortical abnormalities (neural substrates of higher cognitive function), whereas aspects that are restricted to motor dysfunction point to abnormal motor systems (eg, basal ganglia). A child with autism can present both types of behavior at different times or concurrently. It is very likely that treatment will need to differ for each entity of SIB: behavioral intervention for the learned behavior, and pharmacological approach for the motor dysfunction.Another application of the systematized characterization of behavior in humans is its use in animal research. Can animal models based on human observation be developed? One example might be SIB associated with social isolation, which has been characterized as a self-stimulation behavior, and has been observed in monkeys placed in isolation (for review see Jones & Barraclough, 1978). This strategy is difficult to apply due to obvious species differences that pre-
