This research investigates the association between food stamp program (FSP) participation and body weight among the National Longitudinal Study of Youth 1979 Cohort. Previous studies indicate FSP participation may influence participants' food consumption patterns, by increasing their propensity to consume energy-dense foods, which places them at higher risk for obesity. However, recent evidence suggests that FSP participation effect is not associated with positive weight gains. This study reexamines the association between FSP participation and bodyweight status by using quantile regressions on cross-sectional data and panel econometric methods on longitudinal data. We found a positive association between FSP participation and bodyweight among white female respondents is still prevalent. Our results also indicate that the association is stronger for the higher percentiles of the BMI distribution. We also merged the NLSY79 data set with the Cost of Living Index published by the American Chamber of Commerce Researchers Association (ACCRA) and examined the impact of food prices healthy and unhealthy on the body weight status of FSP participants. Preliminary results suggest that higher unhealthy food prices could offset the impact of FSP participation on bodyweight status.
