The transport of glucose in the brain of mammalian species is extremely important, not only for growth and development, but to provide energy for functional activity. Glucose is transported across plasma membranes in mammalian tissues in part by members of a family of glucose transporters. Five highly conserved isoforms of this family (Glutl-Glut5) have been identified in various species and tissues, and all five members are believed to be integral membrane proteins that facilitate glucose diffusion.1,2 The Glutl and Glut3 isoforms have been detected in brain in several species,3-8but a question arises as to whether or not other glucose transporter family members are also expressed. Also, the possibility exists that an as yet unidentified family member may be expressed in brain. Therefore, a rapid and reliable method of determining which glucose transporter isoforms are expressed in various species and tissues is desirable.
