The ability of a population to replace itself is determined by the age structure, growth and fecundity of the mature stock. Where this comprises a large number of mature age groups, with slow growth to a relatively large size, and where fecundity is high, the correspondingly high egg production, greatly in excess of the ultimate recruitment to the adult stock, implies the occurrence of appropriately high egg and larval mortality rates. Since egg production is potentially variable over the possible range of equilibrium stock size between the virgin state and the heavily exploited state, it is the precise nature of the pre-recruit mortality which, through the corresponding stock and recruitment relation, or lack of it, determines the stability of the stock and influences its resistance to the effects of exploitation.
