This chapter deals with the characterization of perceived sound in relation to incident sound. First and foremost is the relative perceived loudness as a function of frequency and intensity; the central parameter is the phon scale of loudness. The relationship is exhibited by equal loudness curves. Next, we discuss the relation between the phon and relative perceived loud- ness, as represented by the sone. As a result of the non-linear response of the ear to an incident sound intensity, one perceives frequencies that are not present in the incident sound. The sounds are referred to as combination tones. Finally, we discuss the ability of the ear to determine the pitch in relation to the duration of a sound of given frequency.
