The justifications for efforts to control, eradicate and prevent brucellosis are economics and public health. The economic aspects include losses due to clinical disease, restrictions of agricultural markets for animals and their products, and the cost of replacement animals. Benefits of eradication include reduced vaccination costs and fewer controls on animal commerce. Brucellosis is a zoonosis and the incidence in humans is directly influenced by the incidence in animals. The economic losses from human brucellosis in reduced productivity, medical care and suffering can be enormous.
