fear would change the outcome of the movement and would trigger a backfire. Finally, in the concluding chapter (Chapter 12), Smithey and Kurtz provide a detailed summary and analysis of the book. This chapter examines a wide range of themes and issues around the paradox of repression such as the importance of mobilization, the role of external actors, the role of media, and the issue of framing. Overall, the book offers substantive insight into the paradox of repression and nonviolent resistance. It sheds new light on the relationship between activists and movement opponents and provides information as to why and under what circumstances repression against activists would backfire. Nevertheless, there is still room for improvement, which may be addressed in future volumes of the book. For instance, although all chapters in the book provide rich theoretical information, some of it would not be useful in large-N studies. The claims that are made in some chapters could not be replicated in real-life settings, as they are experiments that are observed in highly structured laboratory settings (e.g., the Stanford prison experiment in Chapter 4). Thus the relevance of these findings to the complex world raises a question. Furthermore, although the case studies in the book provide in-depth insights into the reciprocal relationship between the government and activists, they do not provide a generalizable outcome. In other words, as the case studies speak to different issues, they lack a consensus as to what leads to the backfire. Moreover, the editors state that their aim is “to develop a better sense of the topography” (p. 2) of paradox of repression. Although this approach makes this volume useful for individuals from various backgrounds, it also decreases its effectiveness in the field of political science as some chapters are not very relevant to the discipline. Nevertheless, the book contributes to current discussion about nonviolent movements by offering a conceptual and empirical overview of the topic and by introducing new ways of looking at the issue of repression.
