Introduction The photoelectrochemistry of small semiconductor particles, which are dispersed in solution, has been an area of very active research in the past 15 years. 1" 12 The materials most thoroughly studied entail the oxides 1-9 and sulfides2c, f, 3c'd'10" 12 of transition metals. Among them, Ti02 has received particular attention due to its notable stability against photocorrosion. 1-5· 9 Furthermore, transparent colloidal suspensions of Ti02 can be readily prepar-ed2a_d’9 and offer several advantages:(i) A high specific surface area leads to enhanced catalytic activity. 13 (ii) Both conduction band electrons (eCB “) and valence band holes (hVB+), which are generated by absorption of photons with hvex> Eg (Eg= 3.2 eV= band gap energy), can beused for chemical redox processes. 1415 f Present address: GSF, Instituí für Tieflagerung, D3300 Braunschweig, West Germany.
