The evaluation of the remaining fatigue life of old steel bridges is very important, because they are very numerous. This paper describes the use of crack growth tests to extend the commonly used evaluation procedure. It was applied to investigate two old bridges in Germany. The bridges investigated were: (1) a truss bridge crossing the Dortmund-Ems canal near Osnabrueck in West Germany; and (2) a riveted girder bridge on the West Berlin Metro. The tests for the first bridge included strain measurements at longitudinal and cross girders under static load and under traffic flow, and tests on the material of the relevant structural elements. Before the second bridge was removed, because the road that it crossed had to be widened, strain measurements were performed at several points in the structure. Traffic load on the second bridge was simulated in the laboratory, in order to verify the field measurements. The test results enabled the classification of the bridge material in terms of fatigue strength, and allowed the propagation of postulated or observed cracks to be determined during the inspection period.
