The nitrous oxide method for measurement of cerebral blood flow in unanesthe-tized man is described and its errors estimated. The fundamental assumptions on which the method is based have been subjected to exptl. verification. Comparison between the nitrous oxide technique and direct measurement of flow by means of the bubble flowmeter in monkeys shows excellent agreement between the two methods. In a group of normal young men the mean value for cerebral blood flow was 54 ([sigma][plus or minus] 12) cc/100 g./min. The mean value for cerebral 02 consumption was 3.3 ([sigma][plus or minus] 0.4) cc. O2/100 g./ min.[long dash].
