METHODSAcute experiments were made with 45 cats, anesthetized by intraperitoneal injection of pentobarbital sodium (30 mg/kg). Supplemental doses of 10 mg were administered as required up to a total of 100 mg/animal. To avoid eye movement artifacts due to current spread from the red nucleus and to prevent movement through stimulation of the spinal cord at Cl, gallamine triethiodide (Flaxedil) was injected intravenously(ZOmg/kg, with supplements as required). Cats were given positive-pressure respiration at 35 strokes/min. Cerebrospinal fluid was drained through the posterior fossa to prevent pulsation of the brain, which was exposed sufficiently to insert stimulating electrodes at Cl level. The head of the animal was fixed in a stereotaxic instrument. The skull was opened with small burr holes to insert recording and stimulating electrodes, and the right motorsensory cortex was exposed. The body temperature of the animals was kept between 36 and 38.5 C.
